What Is A "Flipped Classroom"
A flipped classroom is a term used for a style of teaching where new content is delivered at home prior to class; freeing up more time for teacher-student interaction in class.
Why Should Art Have A Flipped Classroom?
In the art room we have a 35 or 40 minute class to learn content, set up, create art, and clean up after ourselves. The goal of flipping the art classroom is to help student understand the content prior to class and already have time to brainstorm on their very own project. Thanks to the new technology grant students will be able to gain more content knowledge through videos I produce, questionnaires and links I select to share. There will be a review period about the content online to help answer questions. This flipped style of teaching will help the Grandville Elementary Art Department cover much more material during out interactions with our students!
Time And Concerns
Since this will be the first year teaching elementary art I am encouraging student, parent and guardian input as the school year progresses. I am aware that students can have a busy schedule outside of school. As a result I am looking to keep the outside of class work limited to about 15 minutes per a week. This work can be reviewed as many times as a student wants and at a self regulated pace. I will be asking students to do the work in school with the use of the iPads and Google Chromebooks as part of the technology grant so technology and internet capabilities at home and outside of school will not factor into a student's ability to learn.
